These are the only iPads with Face ID, ProMotion-which offers a 120-Hz screen refresh rate for smoother scrolling-four speakers for better sound quality, and more microphones to pick up your voice more clearly.

The software still needs to catch up to make use of all that power, but improvements in iPadOS 15 make them more versatile.

These iPad Pro models also use the same M1 chip that powers Apple's MacBooks. It's so good, I preferred watching movies on it over the 24-inch iMac. It's still LCD and not OLED like newer iPhones (OLED allows each pixel to light itself up individually, providing better contrast), but it adds thousands more LEDs to illuminate the screen in zones, delivering better contrast, dynamic range, and higher brightness. The 12.9-incher is the only iPad to use Apple's Mini LED display backlighting technology. You just can't find many other large slates, and the size is especially nice if you plan to make it your canvas with the Apple Pencil.

The iPad Pro ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) comes in two sizes: 11 inches and 12.9 inches. It has improved cameras on the front and back (plus Center Stage on the selfie cam) and second-generation Apple Pencil support, so the stylus magnetically attaches to the edge and charges simultaneously. With the latest A15 Bionic processor, it can handle pretty much any intensive app and game out there. It also has sub-6 5G connectivity if you choose to add a cellular plan, but best of all is the USB-C charging port, so you can recharge it with your MacBook charger. It loses the Home button but doesn't adopt Face ID-like on the iPad Air, Touch ID is baked into the Sleep/Wake key. You might even be able to fit it into your cargo pants pocket.

It's a little shorter than its predecessor, and its compact size makes it the best slate to take with you everywhere. Apple's 2021 refresh mimics the design of the iPad Pro, with slimmer bezels around the 8.3-inch screen. The iPad Mini, on the other hand, looks like no iPad Mini that came before ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends). It just means interacting with the slate doesn't feel as precise as with other iPads, something thatвЂ™s especially noticeable with the Pencil. This is the only iPad without a fully laminated display, which creates an air gap between the screen and the glass.

(The camera placement is still a bit awkward, though.) But the real highlight is the front camera, which goes from the awful 1.2-megapixel sensor to 12 megapixels and supports Center Stage, the iPad Pro feature that moves the camera around during video calls so you always stay in the frame. The screen now has True Tone, which adjusts the color temperature of the display to match the ambient lighting around you so that it looks more natural. The A13 Bionic chip, which debuted on the iPhone 11, makes it one of the most powerful tablets around for the price, and this generation brings other welcome improvements, like 64 gigabytes of storage instead of a paltry 32. It retains the Home button and thick borders around the 10.2-inch screen. It has the same shape and size as its predecessors, so all current accessories will still work, including the first-generation Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. The ninth-generation iPad is the best tablet for most people ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends), and it's the most affordable iPad.
